basic blanket repair

When Daniel and I first started living together, we stayed in a room that was basically the size of a small office cubicle. The inside wasn’t insulated, so we had a small heater we used for warmth, and we also had this very warm blue checkered blanket. You know how babies have a special blanket? Well, we kind of have our own special blanket.

Its been through happy times, sad times, depressing times, angry. Its the one we reach for when we need to feel comforted, its the one we use when we’re watching movies together, its the one our kids reach for when they are in need of comfort. When our children were infants its the one we laid down for them as their tummy time blanket.

So needless to say after 14+ years of use and washing, it was in need of some repairs. Mostly just a single long stitch to keep it together. I’m not the perfect seamstress either. I can make some basic repairs and things, but it may not look the same, and as long as the end result still works the same, I’m alright with that.

Once we have matching thread (Don’t forget to match the bobbin thread too!) were going to want to test the machine. Always check and make sure you threaded your machine correctly (epically if your just an occasional seamstress like me). And that’s as simple as just grabbing an extra piece of fabric and just running a quick stich line through it to make sure it doesn’t bunch up or snap the thread, things of that nature.

Once we have tested the machine, and ensured that its threaded accurately, lets sew that blanket! Since this is just one long stitch, it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to run a quick seam, being sure not to forget your back stitch in the front, and your back stitch at the end to really lock that fix into place. Something to keep in mind too, is that The bigger the blanket, the more awkward it will be to manage.

I don’t have a large area to work on my sewing projects. So I don’t often craft things that are large. And next time, I repair this blanket, I have a couple things in mind that should make it easier. I need to move my sewing machine to a larger location, where I have room to spread the blanket out. But for now, I’m just glad its fixed, and back on my bed where it belongs.
