Garden Tea

You don’t have space for a compost, or maybe you don’t have the patience. I can relate to both reasonings. I was in a similar predicament until I saw a Facebook video while scrolling my feed. They soaked banana peels in water for 8 hours and it was a great fertilizer for their house plants.

Well, my family may not be huge banana eaters. We do have fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, used coffee grounds around, which are all great for the garden. So, I used the same concept of saving scraps, thinking I could get even more nutrients into my garden that way.

But How? I can’t afford to go out and buy a produce like Miracle grow. So what’s a gardener to do?

This year I kind of slacked off on it, I used chicken manure, and good garden soil this year, and that gave me a great boost. But I’m at a point now where I my plants are starting to need those extra nutrients, so I’ll be making my tea once more. And I’ve learned a few things from doing so too thanks to other folks who do something similar.

Each plant has different needs. What’s good for one plant, may not be good for the rest.

Now, the longer it steeps, it will start to stink. That’s actually a good thing. When the smell goes away, you have given the water all the nutrients the scraps have to give.

Being that it stinks; it would be a wise idea to find a place outside to let this sit instead of leaving it in your kitchen. Your family will thank you.
