Homemade Applesauce
The thought of making applesauce from scratch I still remember was overwhelming. Until a friend of mine told me “Just think of it like making Mashed potatoes!” and then suddenly the thought wasn’t so scary.
I never even thought about making applesauce from scratch until I had a constant supply of apples thanks to the WIC program back when I had my son. And he LOVED applesauce, so eventually, I got tired of tossing apples we never got around to eating and decided I needed to make something out of these apples.
You can do this with a bunch of apples or just a little bit. And honestly, when I went to make applesauce for the first time, I read a recipe or two, to get the general concept of making applesauce, but I never actually measured anything. And from that first batch on I always got a thumbs up from my son and It never lasts long before its all gobbled up, so I take that to mean I must be doing something right!
I fill up the pot I’m gonna be using with a little water while I cut up the apples. I prefer to skin my apples prior to putting them in the pot, but you don’t have to. When you go to put this on the stove you don’t want to have too much water, just enough to barley cover the apples is plenty. We like cinnamon in our applesauce, so while the apples are cooking I add cinnamon, a bit of lemon juice and a tiny amount of sugar.
Once the apples are on the stove, I turn it on anywhere from Medium low-medium and let them cook! It also makes your house smell like an apple pie, which if your family is anything like mine, they will appreciate. Since we mash them in the end anyway, I did forget to time how long it approximately takes for the apples to get soft, so just keep an eye on it, use your best judgment. I wanna say It took mine about a half an hour while they were on medium.
Once they are soft I use a slotted spoon to transfer the apples to a stainless steel bowl, and use my immersion blender to mash it all up. If there is still water in the pot you cooked the apples in, its a really yummy drink! My son is always wanting me to warm it up just a tad, he likes to drink it like warm apple cider.
And there you have it! Making applesauce is easy, and honestly- kind of fun! Weather you know your way around a kitchen or not, this is a really easy thing to make, and is an easy one to teach your kids early on too!
