My Journey Through Genetic Counseling: Insights and Reflections
After The results came back from the Miscarriage, my doctor wanted me to go to Genetic counseling. At first, it was a huge relief, I felt like I might actually get some answers. The appointment wasn’t for a few weeks, but waiting should be no big deal, after all I’ve been waiting how long already?
What is Genetic Counseling?
If you were to ask your search engine what Genetic Counseling is, this is more than likely what you’d read:
” Genetic counseling is a process where a trained healthcare professional, known as a genetic counselor, provides guidance and support to individuals and families regarding the medical, psychological, and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. This specialized counseling helps people understand how genetic conditions might affect them or their loved ones”
my EXPERIENCE
i WAS VERY THANKFUL THAT i was GIVEN A VERY KIND AND PATIENT COUNCELOR. she EXPLAINED EVERYTHING BEAUITFULY, and calmly. When we first got connected, she made sure I knew the purpose of the appointment, and a breakdown of what I could expect.
I was surprised at the questions I was asked. She asked what our ancestry looked like, she asked about any mental or physical disorders anyone in my immediate family may have, and made sure to ask about infertility regarding anyone else in my family.
I answered all of her questions and then she told me what was next. Blood. She wants to now look at my husbands and my chromosomes, to investigate if there is maybe something in our chromosomes that just keeps happening. The test, is 100% covered by our insurance too, which is a huge blessing. Once we find out what our Chromosomes look like, we will then know how we should proceed, and will know more about if there’s even a chance at having our 3rd and final Rainbow baby.
Have you ever gone through genetic counseling? What was your experience?
