Fixing Your Faux Leather Jacket: Practical Tips for Quick Repairs

Recently, right before we got the motorcycle that was then stolen, Daniel also bought a really nice fake leather jacket. And yes. I know, it sounds weird. But the jacket itself is really nice and really warm. It’s also made with fake leather.

And durability wise, its stood up pretty well. To give an idea, he’s been doing everything from wiring up security cameras, to building a shed. And recently he managed to get a hole in his jacket. And well; were nearing wintertime now so this man NEEDS a good jacket. Not sure if I’ve mentioned this or not yet, but while my husband is muscular, he’s still scrawny. So he gets cold easily.

Hand-Sew or Machine Sew?

I opted for hand sewing this hole, because of the size of the rip, and the place. I feel like with where its at, it would be less of a hassle to hand sew it. If I were to machine sew it I’d have to rip some stitches out just to access it, Something I really don’t have time for.

Will it look brand new?

That’s a big no good buddy. What I’m doing is just sewing the ripped part, and the very end of the zipper back on. But it will look better than having a big old rip in it as well.

Tips for Sewing Faux Leather

I had never sewn in faux leather before, so I had to look up some tips, just to ensure that I wouldn’t ruin my husbands jacket. There were some great tips I’m glad I read up on before sewing his jacket.

  • Use a very thin, very sharp needle; designed for sewing synthetic material
  • Polyester/Nylon thicker thread
  • Simple Running stitch
Fixed!

Lasting thoughts?

Honestly, it wasn’t hard. It was just as if I was sewing up my husbands denim Carhart jacket. Now, would I do a large sewing project with fake leather? Eh, no not so sure I’m ready for that yet. But I am no longer intimidated by the thought of it like I was. I always anticipated it to be extremely hard, and difficult and assumed I would need special materials that I do not have.

Don’t be scared of faux leather if you too have a jacket or article of clothing in need to be fixed. It was by far way easier than it seems like. if you know how to sew even the basic of pillowcase, I have faith that you could sew faux leather.
