No-Waste Homesteading: Giving an Old Shirt a New Life as a Shopping Bag

Recently I was going through my clothes, getting rid of a few things. I typically donate or sell them as long as they’re in good condition, however I started to wonder if there was a way I could just reuse them, maybe strengthen my sewing skills while I was at it. I had seen a tutorial on Pinterest over and over again, so I finally decided to give it a try. It looked simple enough anyways.

Overall this is.a 90% new sew craft. You really only need to know how to sew a straight seam. There are options to make it a bit more ‘cutsey’ like I did but if you’re just going for ‘this needs to work’ then you only have to sew a straight seam at the bottom. Perfect for kids to make if they’re wanting to learn how to sew.

Materials:

  • Tshirt
  • Sewing Machine
  • Sissors
  • Thread
  • Bias Tape/lace (optional)

Directions:

Turn your t-shirt inside out and sew a straight seam on the bottom. That will turn into the bottom of the bag. Once you sew that seam, but the bottom half of the shirt, just below your seam.

Now you’re gonna want to cut the sleeves and the collar off your shirt and you have your bag! I on the other hand wanted to make it a lil cuter considering I didn’t cut as evenly as I should have, and it just looked like unfinished edges. So I added some lace I had laying around. I pinned it to the collar and where the sleeves were and really liked how the bag as a whole turned out.

Future Improvement?

I might try making 2 next time and using one to line the other, in my mind I feel like it would make it look even cuter and possibly even make it feel a bit more ‘heavy duty’ for lack of a better word.
