Round Table Ranch Saga
When I first met Daniel, he said he hated ranch. For my sheltered self, that sounded insane! Who in their right mind hates ranch? So, me being the awesome girlfriend I was at the time, coaxed him into trying ranch at a place who knows how to make ranch. Round Table Pizza. Anytime I go there, I have a salad, just because their ranch is absolutely amazing. And Daniel loves pizza, so it seemed like a no brainer.
I still remember what we ordered too. This was before we had kids (and responsibilities!) We ordered a large King Arthur Supreme, with 12 garlic twists, I had a salad and we both had a soda. When we got our food, I bribed him to try his pizza with just one little dip of ranch. And he did, still so sure he was going to hate it, but at least this would be the end of it. (It wasn’t) because as soon as that pizza with ranch hit his tastebuds his eyes opened wide . He loved it!
“This isn’t bad” I remember him saying, and he went up to the salad bar, getting more ranch to dip his twists and crust in. So now came the difficult part. I wanted to replicate that round table ranch. So next time I went to the store, I got one of the hidden valley ranch packets, and tried to make it.
I didn’t have buttermilk though, so I just used regular whole milk. And I got the taste down! It would however take years before I would figure out how to fix the consistency.
When you consume buttermilk Ranch from a place like Jack in the box, its got this tangy taste to it. Well, I discovered recently, that buttermilk ranch that’s homemade, doesn’t have that added tanginess. So when your making it, and the packet says buttermilk, don’t be like me and think “I don’t want my ranch to be tangy”. It will NOT make your ranch tangy unless you put lemon juice in it yourself.
Ingredients:
1 Cup Mayonnaise
1 Cup buttermilk
1 Ranch packet (hidden valley)
Mix and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before consuming (gives the consistency time to thicken )
