If there’s one thing I enjoy doing lately, its looking at cookbooks. Which sent me into a rabbit hole of different ways to preserve the recipes that I make for my children. I’ve tried doing it scrapbook style, which was fun but a lot of work.
Then I saw a friend of mine post a picture and in it I saw a journal style book titled recipes. That’s a great idea! I looked on amazon and noticed there was a wide variety of different kinds. I picked out one I liked the look of and started thinking about what recipes to include. There were some I had to include simply because they are recipes that were handed down to me, and its only right for me to hand them down to my children.
What to get
How to do this will depend on how you want to do it. I thought I wanted to do it scrapbook style, but I couldn’t keep up with it. For other people, scrapbook style might work out great for them. I like the idea of a journal style because I personally look at cookbooks far more than I look at my little box of recipe cards. And with a journal like one, I can put it on the bookshelf right along with my other cookbooks, and I could see where it might get more use.
What I got and What’s going in

What I got was a beautiful leather bound notebook with rings to add in anything additional. It came with a pen to use with it as well, although I’m not too sure I’ll continue using this pen. The recipe pages are double sided, however if I write using the pen included, it bleeds through the slightest bit and I’m concerned it might bother me. I honestly wasn’t even expecting a pen to come with it.

This is where Daniel and I will differ in opinions. He tells me to use a good quality pencil, as it holds up better than pen overtime. However, I am personally concerned because some pencils will smudge when you rub on it (weather accidental or on purpose). My instinct, and maybe I’ve been working at my job for too long, but it is to use blue ink pen. It might take me a few pages to determine what works best for what I want to do with it.
You’ll find that this kit specifically comes with stickers and organizing tabs. Not only does it come with some basic categories, but it also comes with blank ones to write yourself (probably the reason for the pen now that I think about it) It also comes with some cute accent stickers to decorate the pages with, which, while small, was a little touch I appreciated.

You’ll find that the page comes with all the must haves of a recipe, a spot for your ingredients, directions, and other notes. The way I plan on composing this recipe book is by giving small facts about the recipe down at the bottom, how it ended up in the family recipe book. Like a Salsa recipe I got from my mom, who in turn got from a magazine in the early 90’s and was just such a hit with my family that it just stuck and was then made for years on.
I feel like even with everything digitized these days it is still important to have physical media to learn from. Not only for cooking either. For me, Cooking is just the easiest one to start. Once we have property, I plan on getting notebooks for gardening, candle making, sewing, and all written in a way, where if I were the one looking at it, I’d be able to learn from it. My thought is that if my grandchildren are given this book, and want to live off the land, these journals will help them. They will have a recipe book that will include wide range of different recipes, a gardening notebook that includes how to grow veggies and fruits, good fertilizing schedules, ect.
I’ve always loved collecting Journals, but I wasn’t one to journal my feelings or anything. I wanted to document something important to the world and society, and not just digitally, but via a physical media too. And I’m really glad I am now starting my journey to do that through digital and physical media.
