One thing I’ve always prided myself on, is every year, I’ve made all of my kids birthday cakes, with the exception of my eldest daughters first 2 birthday cakes. From the time she turned 3 on, I’ve made all of their birthday cakes, and tried to give them what they wanted as best as I could, even if that meant Daniel and I are spending the night before trying to draw whatever characters they want on it.

This year, my son was adamant that he wanted a half strawberry half chocolate cake because he couldn’t decide which ONE he wanted. Well, its his birthday cake so I can’t say no (I could but who does that for someone’s birthday cake? Not this momma that’s for sure)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cake mixes (in this case, one strawberry, one chocolate)
  • 2 Frosting containers
  • Sprinkles
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 cup oil

One cake mix needs 3 eggs and 1/2 cup of oil, and 1 cup water. As you can see, the ingredients list includes ingredients already doubled. If there is any confusion, just follow the instructions on your cake mix box.

Directions:

Preheat your oven and choose one of the boxed cake mixes to make first and make it as per the boxed instructions. Set your timer for the time it takes the cupcakes to bake, as that is usually a shorter period of time than the round cakes. When a toothpick comes out of the center clean, your cake is done. Remove from the oven and let sit for 10-15 minutes before removing from the pan. Your going to do this with the other cake mix too. The challenging part will be the half and half frosting.

Once you decide what cake you want on the top and bottom, add your bottom layer. Since this is the middle of the cake you can choose to not half and half this, but I used it as my chance to practice how to do the whole half and half frosting situation, especially since nobody’s really gonna be able to tell. The best advice I can give when frosting a half and half cake, is that an offset spatula will be your best friend in this instance, and I really urge you to get yourself one.

How’s it Taste?

My opinion: It tasted to me like the standard type of cake.

Vito: Loved it, and said it was exactly what he wanted.

Daniel: Enjoyed it, was expecting the flavors to meld well together

Elizabeth: Also enjoyed it, loved the strawberry cake and chocolate frosting the best.
