A little over a month ago, I finally decided that I was going to stop buying butter and buttermilk, and I was just going to get the ingredient for both- heavy whipping cream. There was only about a penny of a difference once you broke down all of the prices.

The actual act of the making butter is very simple, so often times I’d have the butter going while I was working on something else. And thanks to my new butter mold, I had a place to contain 1lb of butter in the freezer, which is not much different than when I would buy multiple boxes of butter at the grocery store.

Any other benefits to buying the heavy cream?

I found a half gallon of heavy whipping cream for around 10 bucks, and not only was I able to get 1lb of butter out of it, but I also used some of it to make whipped cream, and in soups, and I even added some to some milk to make some hot cocoa (which, my nesquick powder recipe makes great hot chocolate!)

Are there any issues to figure out?

I’d be lying if I said things were going smoothly and there wasn’t a single thing to worry about, the main thing being I need to keep using my butter molder, Some of my sticks of butter have been deformed, where I stuffed the butter into the mold wrong, leaving gaps in places. The other thing I need to do, or figure out is what to store them in when they are in the fridge. I have a butter bell, but that’s usually containing my butter that I want spreadable. then I thought about buying a lb of butter, so that I can use the wax paper that comes around the butter.

Will I keep doing it?

For now, I’m going to keep making butter, and attempt to solve the couple problems I described. When I go live on TickTock (which if your not following, you should be, just search my blog name, Lemkehomestead) I will often make butter, and answer any questions related to homesteading or making things from scratch. I also like that I’m in control over my butter. I know exactly whats in it, since I’m the one who made it.
