The one thing that kept my eye on wanting the food dehydrator was how easy making my own jerky and seasonings would be. I thought the idea behind it was smart sense after all Garlic=Garlic Powder Onion = Onion Powder- and I always have garlic and onions on hand, so why wasn’t I already making my seasonings? That’s what got me wanting a dehydrator.

And then the day came where I finally got it, and even though the onion tears I was excited to try something with my very first batch of onion powder. Right off the bat once the onions were dehydrated and ground up my husband mentioned how much more fragrant the food was as it was cooking. The onion flavor was much more prominent over the other seasonings I added (which, the rest were store bought seasonings)

Why Go through the trouble?

Here are just a few reasons I am choosing to make my seasonings instead of buying them. And honestly, every single one makes since to me.

You know exactly what is inside

You don’t have to worry if theirs any fillers inside. Most typically it will be an anti-caking anent, or MSG, or just way more salt than a human needs. When you make the seasonings yourself, your controlling not only what goes in that shaker, but what goes in your body as well.

Saves a fair amount of change

If your already going to buy onions, and garlic at the store- why not just get a few more and do it yourself? Seasonings these days in my area are close to $6.00 for a small container- I could get 2 bags of onions for that price, and whip up my own onion powder or garlic powder.

Less waste

Typically, when I’d empty a spice container, it gets chucked in the trash. But now that I’m making my own, I’m reusing the containers I have, which means I’m reusing materials, and creating less waste around the earth.

The Joy of Creation

Maybe I’m an oddball, but there is a joy and a profound pride that comes with creating something not only for yourself, but for your family to use as well. After some time, you can even create your own “House blend” of seasonings. Why does that chicken taste so good? Well its moms blend of seasonings shes crafted specifically to meet the taste buds of her household of course.

Is making your own seasonings for everyone? No not at all. But Its for me, and its for my family, so that is exactly what I’ll be doing.
