If you were to tell me that the same man I met 17 years ago in high school who looked like he wanted to murder everyone would now be the most patient, gentle father I’ve ever been around, I would have called you bat-shit crazy. But I can still remember it vividly, the moment he held our eldest for the first time, he was born for fatherhood.

Daniel hates when he gets gifts. Most years, I respect that, and will bake him cakes/cookies or make him a special meal instead, and he appreciates that. But then there’s some years where I may get him something small. He is always appreciative, and since I always try to at least get him things he needs or I know that he wants, it usually at least goes over well.

How This Year Started

Well, it all started at target. And if were trying to pass the blame, he had sent me to target in the first place….And then I of course looked around a bit more than I should have and found a card that was just too good to pass up. It was Star Wars themed, and just the inside and outside were perfect if you know Daniel and I. I figured eh, its just a card, he shouldn’t get to weird about it. That and maybe making him his favorite dinner and cookies was my plan. Nothing major.

But then I was filling up his plastic water bottle and thought about how its been over 100 degrees lately, and how unpleasant hot water must taste on a hot day. So I looked on Amazon for an affordable water-bottle that would also be kinda fun. But then I’m looking through Amazon and a Star Wars sign appears. Well, at this point I had already gotten him a book, and I had helped the kids make a painting, but this Star Wars sign was customizable and it was a nod to his childhood favorite films.

I told myself that was it- it was far more than I knew he’d be comfortable with. But then I went to Holiday market and saw a switchblade comb. Well, who is constantly loosing his comb and buying more? Yeah. It was like a sign that said BUY ME! So. I did. And somehow managed to keep it all under wraps until the Tuesday before Fathers Day when I gave him the gifts. With the fact that my daughters birthday lands right after fathers day, I know my husband and he isn’t going to feel comfortable sharing the spotlight, he wants his kids to have their own special day. So, we celebrated on a day he had off, where he wouldn’t have to go anywhere and do anything.

For dinner, he got a homemade hamburger with homemade french fries, with a Vanilla milkshake made in my new blender, and all in all, I think its safe to say that he had a really good day.
