Essential Items for Your Emergency Food Kit

a few months ago I found myself in a predicament. It was lunchtime. I had promised my son some Mac and Cheese. I go to fill up the pot with water, and I had no running water. Turns out, the water company had some emergency and had to turn off the water to my house, and a few other folks that day. Well, I learned a lesson that day. That I was not prepared for that situation.

So what was I to do? Well. My husband drinks 2Lieter bottles of sparkling water on a regular basis. And I don’t mean the sugary kind either. Because of this, we had a surplus of 2Lieter bottles. I started to fill up the bottles and store them so that in an emergency situation, we have water.

That lead me to thinking, and upon research, found out that to some extent had even become a thing on Ticktock Recently as well.

So- What do you add to an emergency food kit?

Container

First you need a place to put this food kit, and something to put all your emergency food in. Personally, I had an old Tool box that wasn’t being used anymore. I like the fact that its easy enough to carry around, that way If we need to take it and go, we can. I’ve also seen some people to get those plastic totes, and dedicate one of those to being an Emergency food kit. I like this way too because you can obviously fit more stuff inside.

Salt and Pepper/Sauce packets

When I go to in-and out or any restraunt, sometimes I’ll ask for the salt and pepper packets. Because the top of this tool box has a great compartment for storing them. I also have a small selection of sauce packets too:

  • mustard
  • Mayonaise
  • Taco Sauce
  • Sweet Relish
  • Ketchup

I figure it’d be best to use the toolbox as best as I could, and seasonings could help impart some flavor to whatever it is your having to eat. Because ultimately, we’re trying to survive, that doesn’t mean our food has to taste gross or bland.

So what’s in my Emergency food bag?

Pop Top Cans

These are the cans with the easy open pop top. and for my emergency food kit, I packed a couple cans of fish, a couple cans of soup, and a can of diced tomatoes. I don’t like that these things are all tomato heavy, but in a pinch, I could add the diced tomatoes to both cans of tomato soup to get more out of it.

Bagged Soup

By this I mean the soup, typically in a bag and you just add water to. They have them in all kinds of flavors, And where I’m from typically you can find the bear creek brand around most of the grocery stores here in Northern California, Typically I have to add seasonings to their soups, but in an emergency, I could see myself enjoying this nice warm soup after a stressful day.

Vegetable Flakes

so, when we get the instant noodles that have the seasoning packet and a separate vegetable packet, I will typically take out the vegetable packet. So, I also added this to one of the toolbox sections of my emergency kit. They don’t take up space, but in a pinch, they will rehydrate and be just a little extra for your dish.

Still need

There are a few things I plan on getting for this emergency food kit that I just haven’t yet. Powdered milk being one of them. I’ll probably also look into getting 1,2 more of the bagged soups again, I also plan on getting probably some sleeves of pasta. Pasta should last a good long while, and with all the tomato products I already have in the kit, I’d for sure be able to make a hefty batch of spaghetti.

Other thoughts

Its hard to prep for emergency situations, because you never know what the situation will be. So if I can, I’ll probably put this emergency food kit beside our emergency water supply. Because if we are needing to grab the emergency food kit, we will more than likely take a couple (if not all) the water we have bottled up as well. Assuming we have room.
